FAIRFIELD — Fairfield gave Mid-Prairie all they could handle for three and a half quarters on Tuesday night, but in the end, the Golden Hawks hung on.
Despite trailing in the fourth quarter, Mid-Prairie hung tough in the final four minutes of the game to get away from Fairfield 65-55.
Mid-Prairie jumped out to a 10-0 lead early and kept a 14-7 advantage after one quarter. The Golden Hawks’ lead was just 28-24 at the halftime break.
Fairfield’s Riley Perkins caught fire in the third quarter, giving the Trojans the lead with 3-point baskets on a couple of different occasions. A Brock Harland corner 3-pointer tied the game at 41-41 after three quarters.
“We had to toughen up on the defensive end,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert. “We were giving up offensive rebounds that kept them in the game, and then credit to them, they made some tough shots.”
The game was even until midway through the final period. Fairfield went cold down the stretch, and Mid-Prairie hit its free throws to pull away with a 10-point win.
“In the last three four minutes, we really responded,” Lambert said. “We've had a lot of close games in a short amount of time, so it's kind of something we've had to respond to.”
For Fairfield, it was another tough loss after pushing the an above .500 opponent to the brink.
“It's always frustrating to lose, no matter the situation,” said Fairfield head coach Nate Perkins. “It's really frustrating when your kids play good enough to win, and at the end of the game, the breaks don't go your way.”
Mid-Prairie was led by 14 points from Brady Webrer. Ace Peck and Bryce Henry scored 13 points each. Dylan Henry had nine. Harland finished with eight. Conner Wiles had four, and Landon Kos chipped in two.
For the Trojans, Perkins tied a school record with seven made 3-pointers and finished with 25 points. Luke Konczal and Sam Weaton scored 10 points apiece. Andrew Myers finished with six, and the duo of Ben Boatright and Cooper Polonsky scored two apiece.
Mid-Prairie is now 11-8 after the win. Fairfield sits at 1-18.
