WELLMAN - It had been 789 days since Mid-Prairie volleyball last found itself in a fifth set.
The Golden Hawks, normally dominant in their victories, was matched by Center Point-Urbana in the Class 3 Region 6 championship. Mid-Prairie needed to grit out 15 points to punch a ticket to the state tournament.
The Golden Hawks did just that. After it failed to overcome an early deficit in the fourth set, which saw the Stormin Pointers tie the match at 2-2, Mid-Prairie stormed out to a 7-2 lead in the fifth. That gave the Golden Hawks enough of a cushion to secure a 3-2 (23-25, 25-11, 25-17, 21-25, 15-12) win.
Center Point-Urbana was able to stave off a reverse sweep after winning the first set. The Stormin Pointers had their best start of the match, taking an 11-7 lead, and never trailed after that point despite Mid-Prairie tying things up at 17. CPU finished on a 8-4 run to force a final set.
The Golden Hawks were able to re-kindle their momentum in the fifth in a similar fashion to the middle portion of the match. Mid-Prairie responded to a 23-25 first set loss by holding CPU to just 28 points over the next two.
The win sees Mid-Prairie reach the state tournament for the second straight season. The Golden Hawks (30-9) will face Assumption (25-7) in the quarterfinal round at 10:25 a.m. Nov. 4 inside Xtream Arena in Coralville.
