Mid-Prairie football runs past Davis County

BLOOMFIELD — Friday’s football battle for second place in Class 2A’s District 6 was won by Mid-Prairie 49-32 over Davis County.
The Mustangs got within 14-8 before Mid-Prairie scored three times in the second quarter for a 35-8 halftime lead. The home team outgained Mid-Prairie through the air 155-105 and overall 412-404. The Golden Hawks had 299 yards rushing, DC 257.
Tyler Helmuth ran 19 times for 145 yards and scored touchdowns on runs from the 4, 6 and 25-yard lines. Braden Hartley had two rushing scores and 120 yards on 16 carries. Will Cavanagh was 8-for-11 passing with Jackson Pennington grabbing three for 36 yards. Cain Brown had a 17-yard touchdown reception.
Pennington also caught a pass from the Mustangs quarterback and Collin Miller ran for 26 yards with his interception. Hartley led the defense with 10 tackles. Grady Gingerich had eight.
The victory earned the Golden Hawks a home playoff game this week against Northeast (4-4). Mid-Prairie finishes the regular season with a 5-3 record and 4-1 in the district. Davis County (4-4, 3-2) plays at Alden Iowa Falls (5-3).
Herlmuth had 629 yards this season on 70 carries and Hartley added 408 on 51 rushes. The two nearly equalled Kayden Reinier’s total of 1,271 (151 carries) from the 2020 season. Cavanagh rushed 64 times for 279 of Mid-Prairie’s total of 1,610 yards rushing.
Cavanagh has completed 65 percent of his passes this season, going 72-for-11 for 952 yards with 12 touchdowns and only three interceptions. His favorite receiver was Pennington, whose 27 receptions were twice that of Jarrett Hoffman, who was second with 12 for 183 yards and three scores. Pennington had 299 yards and three touchdowns.
