WELLMAN — With a win over the West Burlington Falcons on Wednesday night, the Mid-Prairie girls basketball team is just one win away from sealing a trip to the state tournament.
The Golden Hawks put together a complete performance to fend off the Falcons at home, 64-58.
Mid-Prairie never trailed at any quarter’s end in the Class 3A Region 4 Semifinal matchup.
After one quarter of competition the Golden Hawks held a 15-9 lead over the Falcons.
West Burlington clawed its way back to within two, 29-27, but Mid-Prairie took the reins once again at the end of the first half, scoring seven straight points to hold a 36-27 advantage at the break.
Mid-Prairie kept its distance throughout the third and fourth quarters, but West Burlington used a late surge to cut the lead to just three in the final minute of the game.
The Golden Hawks were able to stave off the Falcon comeback to earn themselves a spot in the Region 4 final.
It was a balanced scoring outing for Mid-Prairie. Four Golden Hawks reached double figures. Maddie Nonnenmann, Landry Pacha and Josie Greiner all tallied 11 points. Kylie Reinier finished the night with 10. Maya Nonnenmann had nine. Amara Jones added five. Nora Pennington had four. Cana Rediger chipped in three.
Mid-Prairie will square off with Assumption (14-9) at Iowa City West High School on Saturday, Feb. 19.
