WELLMAN — It took a while, but the Mid-Prairie bats finally began to heat up on the tail end of a River Valley softball doubleheader against Iowa City Regina on Tuesday.
After dropping Game 1, 10-1, and scoring a total of two runs over the first 11 innings of the night, the Golden Hawks erupted at the end of Game 2 to win 12-2 in six innings.
Mid-Prairie had a tough time from the opening frame of Game 1. Regina scored four runs in its first at-bat to take a lead it did not let slip away. Mid-Prairie scored one in the second when Brenna Jehle knocked in Katelyn Schneider, but the Regals would score the next six.
Myah Lugar started Game 1 in the pitcher’s circle for the Golden Hawks. She was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs (six earned) on 11 hits and one walk, while striking out four batters.
Regina held a 1-0 advantage after the first inning of Game 2, but Mid-Prairie tied it up with a run in the second. The Regals went back on top, 2-1, after plating another in the fifth, but it was all Golden Hawks from that point forward.
Regina took its first lead of the night in a four-run fifth. Then, after starting pitcher Dawsyn Miller shut the Regals down in the top of the sixth, the Golden Hawks exploded for seven more in the bottom of the sixth to reach the 10-run mercy rule threshold.
Hannah Sellers had a big performance for Mid-Prairie in Game 2, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Dakota Mitchell was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Schneider knocked in two runs. Jehle was 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI, and both Madeline Schrader and Brittany Kinsinger knocked in a run.
