MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant Community High School played host to its annual cross-country meet on Tuesday. The day was won by Mid-Prairie, which won both of the individual high school races.
The first high school race of the day was for the varsity girls, where Brooklyn Stutzman took the top spot. The Golden Hawk sophomore finished in 19 minutes, 30 seconds.
“Mile two, I was like, 'OK, I feel really good,” Stutzman said. “The weather was perfect. It was just a great race.”
Stutzman beat out Iris Dahl of Washington in the final stretch. Dahl crossed the tape in 19:36.
Mid-Prairie’s Rachel Hostetler took fourth place, giving the Golden Hawks two in the Top-4. Tessa Brokaw finished 12th.
“This year, we were like, 'we're just going to try to rebuild and get back to where we were,'” Stutzman said. “We've already won so many meets, and we're just shocked at how good we're doing.”
Washington’s Lauren Horak and Kendall Hinrichsen took 13th and 14th respectively to put three Demons in the Top-15. Mt. Pleasant’s Quintrie Lee finished 15th.
In the boys’ race, defending Class 2A champion Emmett Swartzentruber turned it on midway through the race and never looked back, crossing in 16:23.
Swartzentruber won the race by just under four seconds, continuing a nice start to his senior year, after an upset win at the state meet last fall.
“It's a little different,” Swartzentruber said. “I'm no longer flying under the radar.”
The next runner across the line from the Union area was Washington’s Tyler Alderton, who crossed in 16:34, just ahead of former Southeast Conference rival and current WACO standout Jude Dykstra, who finished in 16:35.
“It felt great,” Dykstra said. I knew I had to bring the fire.“
Mid-Prairie’s Preston Yutzy finished sixth in the boys’ race. Washington’s Andrew Rees was behind him, in seventh.
Washington’s Sawyer Tschantz finished ninth, to put three Demons in the Top-10. Mt. Pleasant’s Locken Henderson took 10th. Mid-Prairie’s Max Swarzentruber finished 15th.
