WELLMAN — Mid-Prairie volleyball enters familiar territory after its regional semifinal win over Albia on Thursday.
The Golden Hawks (32-8) had really no problem with the Lady Dees (21-14), winning 25-6, 25-11 and 25-14.
“I’m super proud of this team,” Mid-Prairie senior middle hitter Callie Huber said. “Usually we make it to this stage and are playing really good. We just have to use this momentum in the next round and get that win.”
It was all Mid-Prairie through the opening set. The Golden Hawks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, posting their most lopsided set win of the night as Albia failed to get above seven points.
Set two saw Mid-Prairie get out to another early lead.
Albia was able to keep it as close as four at 9-5 and 10-6, but it was all Golden Hawks from then on.
A kill from Harper Pacha and two kills from Jovi Evans, followed by an ace from Avery Helmuth solidified the Golden Hawks lead at 16-7.
Mid-Prairie gave up just four more points the rest of the set.
The final set of the night saw the Golden Hawks jump out to yet another big advantage early.
Mid-Prairie built a 6-1 lead, which featured four kills from Jovi Evans through that span.
Kills from Callie Huber and Pacha put the Golden Hawk sup 10-4 and 13-5 respectively.
Albia never had an answer as Mid-Prairie closed with 12-10 run.
Jovi Evans led Mid-Prairie with 13 kills. Callie Huber had eight kills and Brylee Gearhart seven.
Avery Helmuth finished with 19 assists, while Evans had 16.
In the digs department, Dakota Mitchell finished with 15. Katelyn Harland finished with 12.
Jeorgia Evans had four aces in the win, while Mitchell had three. Huber and Pacha had two each as well.
Mid-Prairie advances to the 3A Region 8 regional final against Wilton (32-7) on Tuesday.
“This year has been amazing,” Mid-Prairie senior Lanee Duwa said. “We’ve had a huge goal since the beginning. We’re getting closer and closer. The regional final is here on Tuesday so it’s go time. We’re ready to go with a lot of energy. We’re excited.”
The two squads have played twice this season, with the Golden Hawks winning both.
The past two years Mid-Prairie has had to hit the road for the regional final, but not this time around.
“Our girls love playing at home in front of their home crowd,” Mid-Prairie head coach head coach Sherry Evans said. “The student section is amazing. The girls are just more relaxed.”
“We have a good routine when we’re here,” Golden Hawk head coach Zeb Evans said. “The girls know what they have to do. It’s going to be electric.”
