The competition was stiff on Tuesday afternoon for the Mid-Prairie girls? golf team at the Linn-Mar Invitational, but that led to a nice showing for the Golden Hawks.
The Hawks finished the 18-hole tournament with a team score of 457, led by Allyson Wertz?s 100, as the Hawks took 12th place against a number of 4A and 5A schools.
?Overall the kids played really well,? Mid-Prairie girls? golf head coach Tracy McArtor said. ?They were only a handful of shots higher than the team score they posted in our home invitational just a week ago, and on a tougher course. I was very pleased with their effort.?
Golden Hawk freshman Paige Slabaugh finished second on the team with her best 18-hole round of the year, shooting a 116.
Lindsey Palmer had a 120 for the Hawks, while Olivia Nisly had a 121 and Cassidy Bender carded a 129. Tiffany Fisher rounded out the scoring with a 154.
?It?s played on a very tough golf course at Hunters Ridge,? McArtor said. ?The length of the course is not so much an issue, but lots of bunkers and water hazards that we don?t get a lot of opportunity to see at home. The experience prepares them for tournament play down the road, though, which is good.?
Mid-Prairie will travel to Marengo on Friday afternoon to take part in the Iowa Valley Tiger Invitational.
