Mid-Prairie’s Kelly gets 1st title

ANAMOSA - The sport of wrestling for females is growing in the state and that was evident Monday with a large turnout of 125 competitors.

Mid-Prairie's Madison Kelly picked up her first tournament championship while Bronwyn Brenneman and Sarah Meader finished second.

'This was the biggest girls tournament we have attended this year,” Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey said. 'The level of competition was much higher Monday night than at some of our other tournaments.”

There were enough wrestlers that weight classes were divided up into different divisions. Conducting the four-man round robin format with multiple wrestlers in a weight required a ranking system to decide who went into which division.

Kelly was able to win her division with much more aggression on the mat than she previously showed, according to Garvey. 'She made a few adjustments from Saturday's tourney that really helped her.”

Mid-Prairie girls will be in action Friday at Highland with a 5 p.m. start.

'My message to the team was that we need to be more aggressive,” Garvey said. 'That seemed to be our downfall Monday night. We waited too long to get our offense going and it really cost us.”
