Middle school sports update
Over the past two weeks, the Washington eighth-grade football team has posted a big string of victories, knocking off Mt. Pleasant and Mediapolis in blowout fashion.

Over the past two weeks, the Washington eighth-grade football team has posted a big string of victories, knocking off Mt. Pleasant and Mediapolis in blowout fashion.
The Demons took on Mt. Pleasant in a road contest on Sept. 20, and it kicked off with the Demons jumping out to a 22-0 lead en route to a 40-16 victory.
Trashaun Willis opned the scoring with a 57-yard scoring run, with Wilx Witthoft notching a two-point conversion to make it 8-0 Demons.
Willis then found Spencer Sotelo for a 70-yard touchdown pass, where Witthoft added another two points, as the Demons made it 16-0.
Willis accounted for the next three Demon scores, running in from 12, 1 and 36 yards respectively, to see his team take a 34-8 lead.
Witthoft capped the night with a 35-yard score to close the game at 40-16.
Sotelo had a pair of interceptions in the contest.
In the contest against Mediapolis, the defense was strong, posting a shutout during a 50-0 victory.
Kael Adam led the team with a pair of tackles for loss, while Beau La Ruee had one TFL and Reece Mayer posted a sack.
Wyat Stout and Quintynn Alexander each had an interception in the game.
Willis opened the game with an 8-yard touchdown run, and found Drake Kron for the two-point conversion through the air, before Willis made it 14-0 with a 45-yard touchdown run, and Witthoft added the two-point conversion, putting Washington up by 16.
Willis found Sotelo for a 55-yard score for a touchdown, before another 5-yard touchdown run by Willis opened the scoring to 30-0.
Witthoft sprinted 68 yards for a score, and Willis found Sotelo again for a 40-yard strike, as Washington jumped out to a 44-0 lead.
Mayer then found Bryan Martin for an 88-yard touchdown strike to close the scoring.
The next eighth-grade football game will be at home on Oct. 4, when they take on Fort Madison.
The seventh-grade volleyball team opened their season earlier this month, and over the last week have taken part in a pair of matches, facing off against Keokuk and Edward Stone Middle School.
Against Keokuk on Monday, the Demons fell in straight sets in the A game, falling 21-11, 21-10 to the Chiefs.
The B team took Keokuk to the three-game limit, and took a victory over the Chiefs. The Demons fell in the first set, 21-10, but rebounded for a 21-18 victory in set 2 and won the decisive third set, 15-7, to pick up the match win.
The C team split their night with Keokuk, picking up a 21-15 set win and a 21-12 set loss.
On Thursday, the Demons faced Edward Stone and the A team went the full three games in the match.
After picking up a 21-17 victory, Edward Stone handed them a 21-17 victory in set 2 to force a third set.
Edward Stone emerged on top with a 15-8 victory.
In the B match, the Demons again were forced into three sets, winning the first game 21-14 but falling in the second 21-17. The third game saw Edward Stone pick up a 15-11 victory.
The C team picked up a split on the night, with a 21-11 victory in game one, before a tight 22-20 victory in the second game.
The next contest is scheduled for Oct. 3 at Fort Madison.
