Eighth-grade football closes season with pair of wins

Eighth-grade football closes season with pair of wins
The WMS eighth-grade football team ended their season on Tuesday night, and ended the season with a pair of strong victories.
On Oct. 4, the Demons hosted Fort Madison and cruised to a 44-0 victory.
Wilx Witthoft opened the scoring with a 75-yard kick return, adding a two-point conversion, followed by a 2-yard rushing score from Wyatt Stout (two-point conversion picked up on a pass from Trashaun Willis to Spencer Sotelo) to make it 16-0.
Sotelo returned a punt 72 yards on to add to the lead, before Witthoft sprung a 58-yard rush for a touchdown.
Witthoft followed that up with a 62-yard fumble return for a score, while Willis found Stout for a 58-yard strike to round out the scoring.
Thomas Bias and Zayne Laws each picked up a tackle for a loss in the contest, while Alex Guzman recorded a sack and Reece Mayer had a fumble recovery.
In the season finale, the Demons went up against Fairfield and picked up a 38-6 victory.
Witthoft opened the scoring with a 76-yard touchdown run, followed by a Willis 12-yard scoring rush.
Willis found Sotelo for a long 98-yard touchdown pass to make it 24-0, and added another rushing touchdown from 6 yards out to help Washington get to a 30-0 lead.
Willis capped off the scoring with a 59-yard touchdown pass to Sotelo.
Zach Stout finished the contest with 70 receiving yards in the game.
Bias led the team with three tackles for a loss, while Witthoft had a pair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Quintynn Alexander recorded an interception in the victory.
Eighth-grade volleyball finishes October 1-2
In the final three matches of the season, the eighth-grade volleyball team earned a 1-2 mark, claiming a victory over Mt. Pleasant on Oct. 6.
In the victory, the A team won their match with a 21-16, 17-21, 15-10 victory, fighting to the final points to get the win.
The B team picked up a sweep on the night with a 21-13, 21-15 victory, and the C team earned a 21-14, 21-17 win.
In a loss to Fort Madison on Oct. 3, the A team fell 21-3, 21-13, the B team was swept 21-9, 21-12 and the C team picked up a three-set victory, falling in the first game 21-14, but rebounding for a 21-18, 15-6 match win.
In the final match of the season against Fairfield on Monday, the Demon A team fell in two sets, as the Trojans won the match 21-14, 21-6.
The B team fell as well, 21-16, 21-9, while the C team fell in close 21-17, 21-14 sets.
The eighth-grade team finished with a 2-7 record on the year.
