FAIRFIELD — A low-scoring affair in Fort Madison turned into a Trojan blowout when the Fairfield softball team took on the Bloodhounds on Thursday night.
In a battle of 2-0 teams in the Southeast Conference, Fairfield flexed its muscle with a 10-run sixth-inning, which pushed the Trojans past the Bloodhounds 13-4 in six innings.
“We have some hitters that have some power,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. “If we put things together all at the right time, swinging at the right pitches, we're capable of doing that.”
The Trojans held a 3-1 lead after five innings, thanks in large part to a quality start from Leah Helmick. Helmick’s offense picked her up in the sixth, when Fairfield’s 10-run spurt brought the lead to 13-1.
The big hit in the rally came from Lilly Bergren, who blasted a 2-run shot to left field.
“It wasn't the farthest hit ever. It's a short fence,” said Bergren. “But it was a good feeling to do that, especially with some slower hits at the beginning of the game.”
Bergren went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in the win. Emma Septer finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Helmick had a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Hayley Eklund had a strong day, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Vanessa Kessel was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Olivia Hollander had a pair of hits, and Faith Jones finished with one hit and one RBI.
In the circle, Helmick gave up four earned runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out four batters over a complete-game four innings.
