Mt. Pleasant track athlete Brandon Moorman has been selected to compete in the Senior All-Star Spotlight Track and Field Meet at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill., on Saturday.
The meet features the best high school seniors from the state of Iowa, who will compete against athletes from Illinois and Wisconsin.
Moorman had to be nominated by a coach or fan on the Iowa Association of Track Coaches (IATC) website, and then selected by a committee of coaches from across the state of Iowa.
?It?s a big honor,? Mt. Pleasant Track and Field Coach Scot Lamm said. ?(Moorman) will be running with and against elite athletes from all three states.?
Lamm was also honored as a selection for the meet; he was chosen by the IATC as one of the coaches for the Iowa team.
Moorman, who has signed with Iowa State University, joins the likes of other elite area athletes, such as Cedar Falls sprinter James Harrington, on the list of Spotlight Meet selections.
?(Harrington) has the fastest 100- and 200-meter times ever run at Drake Stadium by a high schooler, and Moorman could be running in a 4x100 with him,? Lamm said.
Right now, about 50 athletes have committed to represent Iowa on the boys? side of the meet, but that?s not a guarantee that all of those athletes wll be there.
Iowa athletes who participate in the meet are given lodging and a uniform to wear; however, they?re responsible for getting their own transportation to the meet.
As a result, Lamm and Fairfield Coach Brian Dunlap will be picking up a number of area athletes and taking them to Joliet, Ill.
After all, this is a one-time opportunity, and they?d like to see athletes like Moorman take advantage of it.
?A lot of people may not know about it, but it?s a pretty big deal,? Lamm said.
