BURLINGTON — The Mt. Pleasant boys basketball team was oh, so close to its first Southeast Conference win of the season on Friday night.
The Panther boys fell 64-55 in overtime against Highway 34 rival Burlington. The girls dropped their game 60-33.
Mt. Pleasant had to stage a comeback from down 46-39 after three quarters in the boys' game. Noah Lange hit a game-tying layup in the final minute to knot things up at 53-53. Mt. Pleasant had a shot to win the game in the final ticks, but couldn't get a good shot off.
In the overtime period, Mt. Pleasant's offense went cold, thanks in part to leading scorer Noah Lange fouling out. Lange would finish with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Aiden Humble scored 11 points in the loss. Brody Clark had nine off the bench. Keegan Heaton finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Ian Reid had eight points and six rebounds, and Ryan Helling scored six points.
The Panther girls fell behind early, losing the first quarter 22-8 against the first-place Hounds.
Burlington would edge Mt. Pleasant in a much more competitive second quarter to go up 35-18 at halftime. The Grayhounds led 49-23 after three quarters.
It was Mt. Pleasant's first loss on the girls' side in three tries. The Panthers came into the game riding big wins over both New London and Fairfield.
The Mt. Pleasant boys are now 1-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Panther girls are 3-9 and 1-5.
