MP boys’ tennis wins, girls fall to Fairfield

Both the Mt. Pleasant boys' and girls' tennis teams took on Fairfield on Monday in a Southeastern Conference game. The boys' team won 7-2 in Fairfield and the girls' team fell 8-1 at home.
The Panther boys took four of the six singles matches to jump out to an early lead, and then swept the doubles matches to close it out.
Corbin Broeker took the No. 1 singles match over A.J. Greiner, winning 6-3 and 6-3. Donny Arledge picked up a nail-biting win in the No. 3 game, taking it 1-6, 7-6(4) and 12-10 against Will Sheppard.
Jack Schimmelpfennig took the No. 1 singles match, beating Brian Parcel 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. Clayton Henriksen beat Michael Holt 6-1 and 6-3 to win the No. 6 match.
Jaxon Hoyle lost in three sets in the No. 2 singles match against Noel Peterson, falling 2-6, 6-3, 10-4. David Nguyen fell in three in the No. 4 match, dropping it 1-6, 7-5, 10-7 to Blake Holden.
In doubles play, Broeker and Hoyle defeated Greiner and Holden 6-2, 5-7, 10-2. Arledge and Schimmelpfennig won 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-7 against Peterson and Sheppard, and Nguyen and Henriksen beat Parcel and Holt 6-1 and 6-3.
'Doubles went really well,” said boys' head coach Tyler Rodgers after the match. 'Mixing up the No. 2 and 3 teams seemed to work well and they were communicating and both got the wins.”
Olivia Larson had the lone varsity win for the Panther girls, winning the No. 6 singles match. She took down Destiny Gridley 9-8, winning the tiebreaker 7-5.
Erin Zihlman fell 8-0 against Yana Gaskell in the No. 1 singles match. Hallie Sandeen was also swept 8-0, falling to Anatta Charoenkul in the No. 2 match. Shaleen Thiengmany lost the No. 3 match 8-3 against Nellie Higdon.
Breeana Runyon fell in the No. 4 match, dropping it 8-4 to Abby Schaefer. Sierra Barton fell in a nail-biter against Tess Paton, dropping the No. 5 match 9-8 with a 7-2 loss in the tiebreaker.
In doubles, Zihlman and Sandeen fell 8-1 against Charoenkul and Schaefer, Thiengmany and Runyon were swept 8-0 by Gaskell and Higdon, and Barton and Larson lost 8-4 to Paton and Gridley.
The boys' tennis team will be back in action on Friday, April 5, when they host Centerville at East Lake Park. The girls will participate in a tournament in Ft. Madison on Saturday, April 6.
