MP cheerleaders to perform at state basketball tournament

The Mt. Pleasant Competition Squads have brought home 11 trophies this season and will be finishing the year with the honor of performing halftime routines for the two Iowa Boys State Basketball Tournament 3A semifinal games on Thursday, March 8, in Wells Fargo Arena.

A select few teams who perform well at the Iowa Cheerleading Championships in November are asked each year to perform at the tournament. The Mt. Pleasant Competition Squad has now been bestowed this honor three years in a row.

Members of the Mt. Pleasant Cheerleading Squad are: Katherine Hall, Shelby Gillis, Claire Melzer, Hailie Baccam, Amy Buckert, Sarah Robb, Chelsey Stark, Morgan Barton, Tasha Vancil, Leslie Taylor, Courtney Mabeus, MacKena Steenblock, Jayde Mumme, Jenny Miller, Hollie Mathews, Andrea Glick, Michaela Mathews and coached by Tracey Shull.

? Amy Buckert, a junior on the Mt. Pleasant Varsity Cheer and Competition Squads, has been selected to the Iowa All-Star Cheerleading Squad. The Iowa Cheerleading Coaches? Association in conjunction with the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association selects cheerleaders to be placed on the All-Star Cheer Squads to cheer and perform at the ICBA/Goalsetters Basketball Tournament to be held March 24 at Dallas Center- Grimes, starting at 12 p.m.

? The Mt. Pleasant Winter Season Cheer Squads produced a video cheer submission to a Des Moines radio station, and they won 25 tickets to the Broadway show Bring It On, the Musical on Feb 28 at the Civic Center in Des Moines.

? On Sunday, March 4, the Mt. Pleasant Competition Stunt Teams competed at the Battle for the Behemoth Competiton held in Cedar Rapids, taking home second and third places in an All-Star Squad Compretition. Members of the two stunt teams were: (team No. 1) Hailie Baccam, Katherine Hall, Claire Melzer, Jayde Mumme and Jenny Miller, and (team No. 2) Shelby Gillis, Leslie Taylor, Sarah Robb, and Gabby Moreira.
