MT. PLEASANT - The Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team scooped up its first win of the season on Monday night, dropping Holy Trinity Catholic 33-27. One night later, the Panthers almost made it two in a row, but fell inches short to Oskaloosa, losing 51-50.
The Panthers held the lead for almost the entire game against HTC, but the Crusaders never let Mt. Pleasant steer too far away from them on the scoreboard.
Defense ruled the first half, with Mt. Pleasant finishing the opening quarters up 15-12. The Panther defense held the Crusaders to just five points in both the second and third quarters, and took a 25-17 advantage into the fourth.
HTC made a couple of big shots down the stretch to stay in the ballgame, but Mt. Pleasant closed things out despite losing the quarter 10-8.
The Panthers were led by Kynlee White, who turned it on in the second half and finished the game with 10 points.
“It was all a team effort,” said White. “I can use my speed to my advantage, but it doesn’t work unless my teammates look up and see that. Speed is our best thing on our team right now, and we really use that to our advantage.”
Abigail Shelangoski added seven points. Paityn Ensminger had six, and both Abby Carthey and Avery Fedler finished with five.
The Panthers played in another nail-biter one night later in Oskaloosa. This time, a potential game-winning shot by Myah Starr just rolled off as Mt. Pleasant lost a wild one, 51-50.
Carthey scored 16 points to lead the way for the Panthers. Starr had 15 points, including a pair of first-half 3-pointers.
Shelangoski scored 10 points in the loss. White finished with seven. Ensminger had four, and both Fedler and Haylay Lydolph finished with two.
Mt. Pleasant is now 1-3 overall. The Panthers will attempt to improve on an 0-1 Southeast Conference mark on Friday night at home against Ft. Madison (2-1, 1-0).
