MT. PLEASANT — They’re called the ‘Panther Relays’ because the meet is hosted by Mt. Pleasant, but the term could have had a double meaning on Tuesday.
Both Mt. Pleasant and Pekin took first at the 2023 Panther co-ed meet. Mt. Pleasant beat out Williamsburg by just seven points in Class A, and Pekin won by 60 in Class B.
On the boys’ side, the Mt. Pleasant Panthers didn’t quite have enough to get past Williamsburg, who won the meet by 12.
The Mt. Pleasant girls racked up the wins, scooping up six individually and one in the relays.
Andi Scott took the 200-meter dash in the time of 27.09 seconds. Mica Carter won the 400-meter dash, in 1:06.91, and Abby Carthey took the 800, in 2:34.61, to give the Panthers three individual wins on the track.
In the field, Josie Gilmore gave Mt. Pleasant a win with a high jump of 5 feet even. Elsie Lange lept 15 feet, 6.75 inches in the long jump, to win that, and Ella Ensminger launched the shot put 15 feet, 6.75 inches.
The Mt. Pleasant distance medley team of Olivia McCormick, Courtney Raub, Lange and Carthey won in 4:35.94.
Washington had one win in the Class A girls’ events. The 4X800 team of Grace Voss, Kendall Hinrichsen, Lauren Horak and Iris Dahl won, in 10:22.45.
The Pekin girls had three wins in the field to anchor their big day. Kayse Miller cleared 4 foot-8 inches in the high jump, and Anna Hadley was a double winner, throwing the shot put 35 feet, 11 inches, and the discus 120 feet, 1 inch.
On the track, Pekin won both long distance events. Chloe Glosser won the 1500, with a time of 5:05.67, and Lauren Steigleder took the 3000, in 11:53.86. The distance medley squad of Lilly Reneker, Sabrina Reneker, Audrey Fariss and Chloe Glosser won, in 4:33.79.
Winfield-Mount Union had two wins on the day. Keetyn Townsley took the 100-meter hurdles with a final time of 17.29 seconds, and the shuttle hurdle squad of Josie Nelson, Kayreana Sharar, Tessa Huston and Townsley won in 1:14.42.
Cardinal’s Addison Adam was victorious in the 200-meter dash, winning it in 27.99 seconds. Highland’s Sarah Burton flew in the long jump, getting 16 feet, 3 inches to beat all competitors.
The Mt. Pleasant boys had a pair of double winners on the day. One of those was Avin Truong, who won the 200-meter dash, in 23.69 seconds, and also won the long jump, with a leap of 20 feet, 11.5 inches.
Will Davidson won two hurdle events. He crossed the tape in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.67 seconds, and won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.67 seconds.
Also winning for Mt. Pleasant was the shuttle hurdle team of Bryce Wilson, Avin Truong, Gavin Kerr and Will Davidson. That group finished the race in 1:01.82.
