MT. PLEASANT — The Southeast Conference boys wrestling battle is coming down to the wire, but there’s still one team yet to taste defeat after another big win from Mt. Pleasant on Thursday night.
The Panthers went toe-to-toe with the Trojans in SEC action, nipping Fairfield 40-35 to stay atop the conference standings. Mt. Pleasant was also victorious on the girls’ side, winning 24-18.
The boys’ shodwodn came down to just a few big matches. The first major flip happened when Mt. Pleasant’s Kolbein Ostby scored a two-point reversal at the buzzer to upend Fairfield’s Jacob Crew. The night was clinched when William Birdsell pinned Brody Lyons after an intense back and forth bout.
“All those matches were big matches,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint. “I think Ostby won the match in the last six seconds, so that was awesome there.”
In the grand scheme of things, it was an opportunity for Fairfield to climb back into the championship race after a tough loss against Fort Madison, and a shot for Mt. Pleasant to knock off its fourth-straight conference opponent.
“I'm really proud of the dudes that we did have in the right spot,” said Fairfield head coach Steve Miller. “We had that meet won three different times, and we still found a way to give it to them.”
Fairfield’s second loss in conference play knocks the Trojans out of the championship race. Mt. Pleasant would lock up the title with a win over Burlington this Thursday in Mt. Pleasant.
The Panther girls sneaked by the Trojans 24-18. Mt. Pleasant picked up a couple of key pins from Paris Phosy, Zenlynn Lee and Olivia Gordy to earn the victory. Fairfield’s Alyvia Abbott and Samantha Lyons also win by fall.
