MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant’s final Southeast Conference regular season game didn’t quite go as planned on Tuesday night. The Panthers were done in by a scrappy Burlington squad just six days away from the SEC tournament.
The Panthers held late leads in two of the three sets, but couldn’t close out either, falling 25-14, 25-19, 25-23.
Burlington dominated the opening set, but Mt. Pleasant was right in the second. The set was tied as late as 18-18, but Burlington won seven of the final eight points to put the Panthers’ backs against the wall.
Mt. Pleasant was on top for the most of Set 3. The Panthers even led 20-16, but once again couldn’t close, as the Grayhounds stormed back for the two-point victory.
“We’re going to just keep fighting and keep getting better,” said Panther head coach Alicia Schrader. “We were in positions to win, and unfortunately came up short, but we showed a lot of fight tonight.”
Alex Scott led the Panthers with 18 kills in the loss. Addison Clark finished with eight.
It was the final regular season home game for both Scott and Clark, as well as Alexes Rios, Aubree Moore, Myah Starr, Kate Musselman, Kynlee White, Ashlynn Beauchamp, Abby Carthey and Meadow Carter.
Mt. Pleasant is now 13-10. The Panthers finished the SEC regular season 2-3, and will get the No. 4 seed in the round-robin SEC tournament, which begins next Monday in Burlington.
