DES MOINES — While a lot of area eyes are on the high school results from the 2025 relays, or perhaps performances from local colleges, it was the youngest area competitors who shined the brightest under the lights at the Blue Oval on Friday evening.
An up-and-coming quartet of Panther eighth-graders not only competed in the Middle School distance medley event, which takes the fastest teams from all over Iowa, but they finished better than any Middle School team in the meet’s history.
Eighth-graders Delaney Anderson, Lindsay Hart, Elodie Rawson and Avery Fedler crossed the tape in four minutes, 12.12 seconds, winning the race by over eight seconds and setting a new Drake Relays record in the process.
Anderson was the first leg of the race, running her split in 28.19 seconds. Hart nearly matched Anderson’s 200-meter time by finishing hers in 28.79 seconds. Rawson ran a 1:04.06, in her 400-meter leg, and Fedler dashed home with a 2:11.09 time on her 800-meter anchor leg.
Fedler was in fourth place when she took the baton and passed the anchors from three schools in her two laps around the track.
