Mt. Pleasant baseball had an up and down finish to its week.
The Panthers were in action on both Wednesday and Friday hitting the road to face off with Van Buren County and then closing the week with a home stand against Muscatine.
Against the Warriors, the Panthers used a big fifth inning to pull away in a lopsided 11-3 victory, while the Panthers’ late scoring heroics fell just short against the Muskies, 11-8.
At Mildred and Eddie Ferguson Sports Complex in Keosauqua, the Panthers and Warriors were neck and neck through four innings.
Both teams exchanged runs in the first inning and Mt. Pleasant answered a VBC run in the second with one of its own in the third to make it 2-2.
Following a scoreless fourth frame, the Panthers broke the game open with a whopping six runs in the fifth to take an 8-2 advantage.
The Warriors followed with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Panthers put up another three runs in the sixth to put the game on ice.
Zach Newton led Mt. Pleasant with two hits and three RBIs. Brayton Hutson had a trio of RBIs as well.
J.C. Sitar finished with two hits. Grayson Lowery and Jaymisen Rich each had an RBI. Landen Seymoure had one hit as well.
On the hill, Lowery threw six innings, giving up five hits, three runs (one earned) with seven strikeouts.
For VBC, Kinnick Millard finished with two hits. Izaak Loeffler, Aidan McEntee, Will Cocherell and Leo Jirak all had hits as well. Cree Kite had the Warrior’s lone RBI.
Millard, Jirak and Aiden Cooper all pitched in the loss. The trio gave up eight hits, 11 runs (11 earned), 10 walks and one strikeout.
Against the Muskies, Mt. Pleasant fell behind early. Muscatine scored five runs in the first inning and would never trail.
The Panthers struggled to find runs early, before scoring once each in the third and fourth inning.
However, the Muskies added five more to its tally between that span to extend their lead to 10-2 heading into the fifth.
Much like their Wednesday night matchup, the Panthers surged in the fifth inning, pouring in five runs to pull within three, 10-7.
With one additional run in the sixth, Mt. Pleasant came within one, 10-8, but that was the Panthers’ final run of the night.
With the pair of results, Mt. Pleasant now sits at 2-3 on the season.
