BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant Panther baseball had a tough go on Monday night at Community Field against Burlington.
The Panthers put together a solid outing on both sides of the ball in the Southeast Conference clash, but the Grayhounds walked away winners 12-3 and 4-3.
Mt. Pleasant had the bats going early in both games.
In game one, the Panthers kicked off the scoring in the top of the second frame with a lead off double by Carter Amos. Payson Coleman downed a bunt single followed by a wild pitch to score Amos.
But for the next two innings, the Panthers were held scoreless.
Meanwhile, the Grayhounds built up a 4-1 advantage during that span.
However, Mt. Pleasant kept pushing back. In the top of the fifth, a pair of RBIs from Jake Ensminger and Payton Walker made it just a one run game, 4-3.
While the Panthers stayed right it in through four and a half innings, in the final two and a half it was all Burlington.
The Grayhounds knocked in five runs in the bottom of the fifth and plated three more in the sixth to win it.
Zerek Venghaus, Jake Ensminger, J.C. Sitar, Payton Walker, Garret Cook, Carter Amos, Ben Newton and Payson Coleman all had one hit in the game.
Ensminger pitched 5.1 innings allowing 12 runs (six earned) on 13 hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
To start game two, the Panthers once again jumped out to an early lead with some hot bats in the box.
RBI singles from Ensminger and Sitar followed by an RBI double from Amos gave the Panthers a 3-0 jump right out of the gate.
Burlington responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs themselves to make it just a one run game, 3-2.
It was a pitchers duel from then on as Venghaus and Burlington’s Kyler Schwartz allowed just three hits between the two of them for five straight innings.
To Mt. Pleasant’s dismay, it was Burlington that broke the four inning scoreless streak with a pair of runs which proved to be game winners in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI double and single.
Carter Amos finished with a pair of hits and an RBI in the game. Jake Ensminger and J.C. Sitar both had hits and Ensminger finished with one RBI.
Venghaus pitched a complete game, allowing four runs (zero earned) on six hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
