FORT MADISON — The Mt. Pleasant basketball teams dove into one of the toughest places to play in the Southeast Conference on Friday night, taking a trip to the Hound Dome in Fort Madison.
The Hound Dome wasn’t actually the friendly confines for the visiting Panthers. The Mt. Pleasant girls fell 63-34, and the Panther boys dropped their game 47-37.
The Mt. Pleasant girls went down 11-5 after one quarter and 29-11 at halftime. The Panther offense looked much better in the second half, but they could never hold off the Hounds.
“We just turned the ball over way too much,” said Panther head coach Curt Watson. “To their credit, their press did a great job against us.”
Mt. Pleasant was led by freshman Abigail Shelangoski, who knocked down a trifecta of 3-pointers in the game to finish with 13 points.
“She was the player of the game for us,” said Watson. “Thank goodness she was there tonight. She's just getting better and better.”
Myah Starr finished with eight points, including a couple of early three-pointers. Kynlee White scored four. Alexa Fuller had three, and Paityn Ensminger finished with two.
Thee Panther boys played good defense, but couldn’t put the ball in the basket. Mt. Pleasant scored a season-low 37 points.
Fort Madison led 14-8 after one quarter, 23-18 at halftime and 34-24 after three quarters.
“We're so young at the guard spot, and we kind of got exposed,” said Panther boys’ coach Eric Rawson. “We had seven-straight turnovers, and you can't score when you do that.”
Aiden Humble scored 16 points to lead Mt. Pleasant. Ryan Helling had 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Noah Lange and Keegan Heaton scored three points each, and both Ian Reid and Brody Clark scored two.
The losses dropped the Panther girls to 1-4 and the boys to 0-4. Both teams are 0-2 in conference play.
