MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant baseball team rallied back on two separate occasions in a home non-conference game against Mount Vernon on Tuesday night, but the Panthers couldn’t finish the job, falling 9-6.
Mount Vernon led 3-0 after two-and-a-half innings, but Mt. Pleasant put up one in the bottom of the third and three in the fourth to take a 4-3 advantage. A wild fifth frame had the teams tied 6-6 after five.
Mount Vernon’s bats had some power left in them. The Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the sixth, and the Panthers could never recover.
Grayson Lowery led the Panther offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Cooper Coleman had an RBI, and Brayton Hutson finished 2-for-3.
Lowery, Liam Marshall and Zach Newton all saw time on the mound. Newton was tagged with the loss, despite giving up just two unearned runs.
Mt. Pleasant is now 17-11 heading into the Class 3A Substate 6 opener at Fairfield on Friday night.
