A couple of Mt. Pleasant tennis showdowns with Davis County on Thursday yielded opposite results as the Panthers split with the Mustangs to start the new year.
In Mt. Pleasant, it was the Panther boys who prevailed 8-1 over the visiting Mustangs. In Bloomfield, Davis County was too much for the Panther girls.
The Mt. Pleasant boys dominated the singles matches, winning every match, including two blowout wins in the Top-2 matchups, as No. 1 Owen Vansickel and No. 2 Jake Ensminger each won 8-2.
Elliot Cook had to grind out a win at No. 3 for the Panthers, beating his opponent 8-6. No. 4 Phoenix Watson won 8-2. No. 5 Tim Cam pulled out an 8-5 win, and No. 6 Gavin Ross prevailed 8-4.
Mt. Pleasant swept the Top-2 doubles matches, as Ensminger and Cook rolled 8-0 in the No. 1 match, and Vansickel and Cam had no problem cruising 8-0 in the No. 2 match. The No. 3 team of Watson and Ross was edged 8-6.
On the girls’ side, the singles matches spelled doom against a tough Mustang group.
No. 1 Ellie Situmeang lost the top match 8-1. Mary Kate Peterson was shut out 8-0 in the No. 2 match, and Eva Rounceville fell 8-0 in the No. 3 match.
Victoria Smith and Bethany Drury put up the two best fights of the night. Smith lost the No. 4 match 8-3, and Drury dropped the No. 5 match by the same score. Audrey Richmond lost the No. 8 match, 8-0.
Situmeang and Rounceille teamed up for the No. 1 doubles grouping, but dropped their match 8-0. Peterson and Smith fell 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles match, and Drury and Richmond dropped the No. 3 match 8-2 as well.
The Panther boys (1-0) will hit the road to take on Keokuk on Monday. The Mt. Pleasant girls (0-1) will host the Chiefs in their home opener.
