MT. PLEASANT — The hot start to the 2022 boys tennis season at Mt. Pleasant continued on Monday night as the Panther boys picked up a Southeast Conference win, defeating Fairfield 6-3 at East Lake Park.
The Panthers won four singles games on the day and tallied two in doubles to close it out.
Mt. Pleasant took the Top-2 singles matches. Owen Vansickel upended Garrett Flanagan 8-3 in the No. 1 match, and Levi Graber ousted Jace Hannes 8-1 in the No. 2 match.
Mt. Pleasant’s other wins came in the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches. Elliot Cook knocked off Dil Hurlin 8-3 in the No. 4 match, and Gavin Ross took down Aiden Flanagan 8-3 in the No. 6 match.
Fairfield’s Brendan Marcellus snagged the Trojans’ top singles win, beating Mt. Pleasant’s Tim Cam 8-1 in the No. 3 match. Jack Unger made it two for the Trojans with an 8-4 win over Lou Schimmelpfennig in the No. 5 match.
The Trojans needed to sweep the doubles matches to take the day, and the No. 1 doubles team of Garrett Flanagan and Haines did their job, defeating Vansickel and Cook 8-2. Mt. Pleasant, however, won the other two doubles matches to clinch victory.
Graber and Cam won the No. 2 doubles match 8-3 over Marcellus and Hurlin. Schimmelpfennig and Ross battled out a thrilling No. 3 doubles match with Unger and Aidan Flanagan, and the Panther pair sneaked by with a 9-8(6) victory.
Mt. Pleasant is now 3-0 on the year. They’ll play at Fort Madison on Friday. Fairfield (0-3) hosts Keokuk on Thursday.
