Both Washington High School golf teams lost to Mt. Pleasant Thursday but in different locations.
The boys had a home Southeast Conference meet against the Panthers and Keokuk.
The Demons shot 180 with Mt. Pleasant at 165. Keokuk had a 213.
Washington's Brock Sobaski finished as the meet runner-up, carding a 38 to a Panther's 36.
Brady Knutson had a 40 for the Demons, Caleb Tanner carded a 43 while John Prohaska had a 59 and Grant Sobaski a 64.
'We shot about where I was expecting for the first meet in the cold and windy conditions, Washington coach Collin Stark said. 'Brock, Brady, and Caleb have had a lot of experience at the varsity level and shot well for the first meet. We have two freshman being asked to play a big role this year for us. We could tell that they were nervous and I'm sure they are relieved to get the first meet out of the way. This year is a process and we have full confidence that by the end of the year, we will be right there to make a run at state again.”
Washington placed seventh at state last season.
The girls also had some new players at the Keokuk meet and lost by a single stroke, 190-191.
'I thought the 191 score was outstanding because of it being the first meet,” Washington coach Len Kull said. 'Between the conditions they played in and our inexperience, it was a great outcome. Our top two shot well even though they had issues.”
Kiki Guo was the meet medalist with a 40 and Demon teammate Josie Tanner had a 42 to tie for runner-up.
'Emily Waite (51) did good,” Kull said. 'She had a little up-and-down round, but she had a good start. Carly Burlingame's 58 was good and she will get better. She's going to work on her tee shots. Emma Nichols (59) had a good attitude and I was pleased with how Madison Fishback (63) played. It is going to be a long process with the new players. The girls need to take their time and be patient. I think they are doing great for the amount of time they spend on the course and I don't want them to get discouraged because I thought it was a great day.”
