Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant had already went at it three times on the baseball field in the regular season, but they’ll do it once more in the district tournament.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its 2023 postseason brackets on Wednesday, and the Trojans and Panthers are due to battle in first round action.
Fifth-seeded Fairfield will travel to fourth-seeded Mt. Pleasant on July 7 for a 7 p.m. showdown as part of the Substate 5 tournament. The winner gets the privilege of heading to No. 4 Marion on July 10, unless eight-seeded South Tama County pulls a monster upset.
On the other side of the Class 3A Substate 5 bracket, Fort Madison goes to Benton Community, and Keokuk travels to play Cedar Rapids Xavier.
In the Substate 4 bracket, Washington earned a game against second-seeded Davenport Assumption, which will be played at North Scott at 5 p.m. If Washington wins, the Demons will take on either Central Dewitt or Center-Point Urbana in the semifinals.
No. 7 Dubuque Wahlert has the top seed in Washington’s bracket. Wahlert faces Vinton-Shellsburg in the first round, with Clear Creek-Amana or Solon getting the winner.
