MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant girls basketball had its regular season finale spoiled on Thursday night as the Panthers fell in a Southeast Conference matchup with Burlington 64-48.
The Panthers kept it close against the rival Grayhounds through three quarters, but couldn’t gain an edge in the scoring column as Burlington pulled away late.
Myah Starr got things going for Mt. Pleasant early on. The Panther sophomore drilled a three to opening up the scoring and give Mt. Pleasant a 3-0 lead. Starr was scorching in the opening frame as the three ball was the first of three from deep that Starr connected with in the first.
Burlington scored the next seven points, but Starr’s second three cut it to one, 7-6, with 4:18 remaining.
Two minutes later a two from Juliana Burns knotted the game at 9-9. The rest of the quarter, the Panthers and Grayhounds tied twice and traded the lead three times before Burlington took a 20-16 advantage into the second period.
Burlington would never trail again.
To start the second, Burlington opened with a 11-3 run, which included a trifecta of threes to make it 31-19.
Mt. Pleasant scored only four more points the rest of the quarter, but held Burlington to just two. At the half, the Grayhounds held onto a 33-23 lead.
In the third, the Panthers stuck right with the Grayhounds in head-to-head scoring, but could only get within nine as Burlington led 48-37 heading into the final quarter.
At the beginning of the fourth, Abby Carthey got the Panthers within eight, 48-40, after three straight points. However, the Grayhounds rattled off a 16-9 run to the final whistle to seal it.
“I was really proud of the girls for the effort they put into it tonight,” Watson said. “They stuck to the game plan and I’m really proud. We had our chances, but give credit to Burlington they made some key shots down the stretch.”
Abby Carthey led the Panthers with 20 points in the loss. Myah Starr tallied 15 points. Hailey Parrott finished with seven. Juliana Burns had four and Addison Peck two.
Mt. Pleasant moves to 4-16 with the loss and 2-8 in SEC play. Mt. Pleasant will begin postseason play against Oskaloosa (10-10) on Wednesday.
