BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant football is back in action on Friday night.
This week the Panthers (2-1) will head over to Burlington to face a fellow Southeast Conference foe in the Burlington Grayhounds (1-2).
Mt. Pleasant has put together a pretty nice start to the season and will be hoping to keep up the momentum in week four on the road.
The Panthers will be looking for back-to-back wins, something they haven’t done since 2020.
This season so far, the Panthers have picked up wins against Fairfield, 13-12, in week one and then Tipton, 33-24, last week.
Between those two wins, the Panthers were defeated by a solid West Burlington/Notre Dame 31-10.
On the contrary, Burlington enters off back-to-back losses. The Grayhounds handled Fort Madison 35-7 to open the season, but lost to Washington 14-6 and then Keokuk most recently 45-7.
Leading the Panthers under center is Zach Newton. Newton had thrown for 210 and one touchdown this season.
On the ground, Cooper Coleman leads the pack with 172 yards and two touchdowns. Payton Walker also has 121 yards and a team high four touchdowns in the run game.
In the receiving column, Avin Truong has been a deep threat, tallying a team high 107 yards and one touchdown on just three receptions. Walker follows with 77 yards on five catches.
Defensively, Walker enters with 32 total tackles and seven for a loss. He also had one sack. Max Sloat has the next highest tally with 14.5 tackles and three tackles for a loss.
For Burlington John Phillips is a dual threat. He’s thrown for 143 yards and rushed for 224 more with four touchdowns. Both those numbers lead the Grayhounds.
Dave Robinson has a team high 51 yards receiving. Adrian Perez-Hall has a team-high 14.5 tackles with four tackles for a loss and two sacks.
The Panthers and Grayhounds will square off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday inside Burlington’s Bracewell Stadium.
