MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant girls basketball showed that it can hang with anyone early on in its matchup against Oskaloosa Tuesday.
The Panthers (1-3) held the undefeated Indians (3-0) to single digits in the first quarter, but they were not able to contain them the rest of the way as Oskaloosa pulled out the 54-35 victory.
Mt. Pleasant came out with a vengeance on the defensive end, holding Oskaloosa to just six points.
Meanwhile, the Panthers scored eight of their own to take a two-point lead into the second. It’s the Panthers first lead out of the first quarter this season.
Mt. Pleasant wasn’t able to sustain its lead.
Oskaloosa went on to score its game high 17 points in the second period. On the contrary, the Panthers scored just three points, their lowest of the night.
Despite the struggle, the Panthers were down only 12 at the half, 23-11, but they could never get back into it.
The third frame was nearly a reiteration of the second as the Indian poured in 16 points, while the Panthers added just five to their total.
Heading into the fourth, the Panthers faced a 39-16 deficit. They went on to outscore Oskaloosa 19-15 in the fourth, but the damage was too great.
The Panthers were also in action on Monday night as they hit the road to take on Holy Trinity Catholic.
Mt. Pleasant was defeated by the Crusaders 41-28.
Both Panther squads will be back on the court Friday when they travel to Fort Madison.
