COLUMBUS — A pair of Union area schools battled on the soccer field in Columbus on Monday. Mt. Pleasant’s girls’ team nipped the Wildcats 2-1, but Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union earned vengeance in the boys game with a 6-0 victory.
In the girls game, Mt. Pleasant opened up the scoring halfway through the first period on a goal by Elly Manning from 20 yards out. She intercepted a Columbus free kick and put in the first goal of the night.
Columbus’ Samarah Garza tied the game up early in the second period. The game was tied 1-1 until the final two minutes, when Manning scored her second off an assist from Charice Auwerda.
Mt. Pleasant’s Evelyn Escobar earned the win in net, letting in one goal and saving two.
Columbus erupted in the first half of the boys’ game, putting five goals in on the Panther defense. The Wildcats led 5-0 at the break.
Columbus put in one more goal in the second half. The Wildcats put one past Panther keeper Nathan Peiffer to end the game at 6-0.
Mt. Pleasant and Columbus/WMU will both be in action on Thursday. The Panthers will take both teams to Washington, and the Wildcats will be at Mid-Prairie.
