FAIRFIELD — The Southeast Conference track and field season reached its climax on Thursday night as the league held its SEC Boys and Girls Track Meet.
There was plenty of drama on both sides, but none more than the battle between the Mt. Pleasant and Washington girls.
Heading into the final event of the night, the 4x400, the Panthers held just a half point lead over the Demons. That meant the winner of the event would take the title.
In what was a back and forth race throughout ended with the Panthers’ freshman anchor Izzy Sloat capitalizing on a slim lead and taking it all the way to the finish.
“What a way to finish,” Mt. Pleasant head coach Scot Lamm said. “We have a lot of talent, and the girls fight for each other. That’s what we need. Our girls showed up and found a way to get it done tonight. We though it might come down to the 4x400 and it came down right to the last leg. It’s just an exciting time. We’ve got a lot of talented seniors and a lot of talented freshman. It’s been a lot of fun all year.”
The Panthers finished with a team best 160.5 points, followed by the Demons in second with 157. Fort Madison was third with 104 points, Keokuk fourth with 71.5, Fairfield fifth with 52 points and Burlington sixth with 37 points.
As for the boys’ race, Fairfield showed out on its home turf. The Trojans were led by their upperclassmen. Senior Gabe Tejada, senior Ryan Giberson and junior Eli Zillman accounted for six total wins for the Trojans.
“These kids put in a lot of work,” Fairfield head coach Brian Dunlap said. “It was a complete team effort led by our seniors. Most of them have been with the program for four years and have developed into the athletes they are. We had really good by in. It’s a testament to not only our kids, but our staff as well. I’m very proud of our team.”
Fairfield finished with 152 total points. Washington finished second with 120 points. Fort Madison notched a third overall finished with 111 points. Burlington was fourth with 73, Keokuk fifth with 65 and Mt. Pleasant sixth with 59.
