NEW LONDON — After coming off winter break, Mt. Pleasant girls basketball needed a win to gain back some momentum after a six game slide.
That’s exactly what Curt Watsons’ squad did Tuesday night on the road at New London. The Panthers brushed off early scoring struggles and hunkered down defensively on their way to a 47-32 victory over the host Tigers.
Things started slow for both squads, but the Panthers held the advantage after the first and second period.
Mt. Pleasant outscored the Tigers by just four in the first frame, 9-5, but added on to that total with 14 more through eight minutes in the second. During that span, New London dropped in eight of its own and by the halftime whistle Mt. Pleasant held onto a 10 point lead, 23-13.
Out of the break, New London put together its best offensive quarter of the evening. Sparked by an opening three from Sophie Malott, the Tiger went on to edge the Panthers 13-9 in the third.
Heading into what was the final quarter of the night, the Panthers held onto a slim 32-26 lead. However, the Panthers saved their best for last.
Mt. Pleasant put it all together in the fourth frame dropping in a quarter high 15 points, while holding the Tigers to just six.
Turnovers were the difference maker as Hailey Parrott and Abby Carthey combined for 12 steals. Carthey also led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points.
Olivia Hester paced the Tigers with 11 points, including three threes. Morgan Jones followed with nine and Mylee Miller six.
Mt. Pleasant improves to 2-9 with the win, while New London drops to 1-9.
