KEOKUK — Mt. Pleasant head coach Curt Watson calls Keokuk High School a “house of horrors” for his girls basketball team, and it was just that on Saturday night.
The ninth-ranked Chiefs knocked the Panthers out of the Class 4A Region 2 tournament, defeating them 63-42. It was the third win for Keokuk over Mt. Pleasant this season, and the 12th-straight in the series.
The first quarter was disastrous for Mt. Pleasant. Any momentum gathered from a thrilling opening round overtime win at Fort Madison was dashed as the Chiefs put together a 15-0 run.
Keokuk led the game 16-4 after one period, 35-14 at halftime and 53-29 after three.
Despite the loss, Mt. Pleasant junior Andrea Lopreato had another big game scoring. She put in 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while also leading the team with five steals.
Lopreato finished the season with 489 total points, breaking the Mt. Pleasant school record. She currently sits third in career rebounds, with 558, and fourth in points, with 955, with one more year to go.
Kenna Lamm ended her senior year with an 11-point night. Fellow senior Jadan Brumbaugh went for six points and four rebounds.
Kate Schimmelpfennig knocked down one outside shot on the night to finish with three points. Tristian Shull ended the game with one.
Mt. Pleasant ended its season at 12-11. Keokuk (18-3) will travel to take on No. 5 Xavier (16-6) in the regional final.
