Mt. Pleasant girls own the day at Denny White Relays
Panthers roll to 11 victories, team title at co-ed home meet

MT. PLEASANT — It was a busy night at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex on Thursday as Mt. Pleasant hosted the annual Denny White Relays, which involved a handful of boys and girls teams around the Union coverage area.
The night was won by the Mt. Pleasant girls, who put up 185 team points to top the standings. Van Buren County scored 176 points for the top girls’ team in Class B. The Washington boys led the area with a four-place finish in the boys’ standings, scoring 114.
The Mt. Pleasant girls won 11 events on the day. The lone individual doublewinner was Kenna Lamm, who won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.
Mt. Pleasant’s Alexis Wagner took the 800-meter run. Abby Blnt won the 400-meter hurdles. Jenna Gilmore bested the field in the long jump, and Jadan Brumbaugh took the shot put.
The Panther girls absolutely dominated the relays. The Panthers took home five relay championships to add to their day.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ 4X200 team of Bailey Jalas, Tristian Shull, Jenna Gilmore and Mica Carter took first. The 4X400 team of Carter, Allie Westercamp, Wagner and Andi Scott won. The sprint medley team of Jalas, Courtney Raub, Andrea Lopreato and Scott took the gold. The distance medley team of Bizzie Richtman, Lopreato, Elsie Lange nad Blint finished first, and the shuttle hurdle tema of Jenna Gilmore, Blint, Josie Gilmore and Lamm crossed the line in front as well.
The Panther girls also had four wins from the junior varsity side, which competed in Class B. Josie Gilmore won the 100-meter hurdles. Alyssa Dascher took the shot put. Brumbaugh won the discus, and the 4X100 team of Raub, Jenna Gilmore, Jalas and Lopreato finished in front.
Van Buren County won 11 Class B races on the girls’ side. That included a sweep in the sprints, as Shea Scott won the 100-meter dash, Kadence Nusbaum won the 200-meter dash, and Payton Wiley won the 400-meter dash.
Faith Neely scooped up another Warrior victory with a victory in the 800. Payten Polling won the 1500, and Libby Bainbridge took the 400-meter hurdles. The Warriors’ lone field win went to Binbridge in the high jump.
Relay winners for the Van Buren County girls included the 4X200 team of Reece Kracht, Scott, Kelcy Welch and Madlyn Jonshon, as well as the spring medley squad of Kracht, Johnson, Nusbaum and Neely.
Washington had two wins on the Class A boys’ side. Lance Sobaski broke a new Demon school record in the 1600, winning in 4 minutes, 24.51 seconds. That broke a record held since 1975 by Perry Stannard (4:24.60). Also winning for the Demons was Brayden Hartman in the shot put.
Mt. Pleasant’s Keegan Elliott won the discus throw to give the Panther boys a win. River Patterson was the lone winner for Fairfield, taking the 400-meter dash.
It was New London that shined in the Class B standings. The Tigers won seven events on the night.
New London had five individual victories on the night. Josh Catala won the 200-meter dash. Rylan Martin took the 800. Alexander Julian won the 3200. Kade Benjamin took the high jump, and Carter Allen finished atop the discus.
Also winning for New London was the sprint medley team of Boden Pickle, Joel Lacy, Camden Kasel and Reean Seberg, as well as the distance medley squad of Catala, Jordan Sharp, Martin and Seth Bailey.
Four area schools had one win apiece in Class B. Cardinal’s Isaac Lett won the 100-meter dash. Winfield-Mount Union’s Gabriel Hemsworth took the 400-meter hurdles. Van Buren County’s Wyatt Mertens won the long jump, and WACO’s shuttle hurdle team of Simeon Reichenbach, Isaac Oswald, Zach Schmitz and Mason Miller crossed first as well.
