MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team had a mountain of a task on Friday night, as the Fort Madison Bloodhounds came into town.
The red-hot Bloodhounds came into the game 4-0, and the Panthers were short-handed due to illness. Fort Madison took every advantage, running away with a 38-12 victory.
“We’ve got to get better,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Curt Watson. “That's what we talked about. We went 2-for-27 from the field.”
Mt. Pleasant couldn’t hang on to the ball in the first half. Fort Madison’s defense played lights out, and the Bloodhounds led 16-1 after one quarter and 30-4 at halftime.
“We've got to get up to 60 shots a game,” Watson said. “We can't shoot 27 shots. We've got to take care of the ball.”
Mt. Pleasant played much better in the second half. The two teams each scored eight points in the final two quarters.
Abby Carthey scored eight points to lead the Panthers. Alexa Fuller had two points. Hailey Parrott and Linzy Striegel each had one.
Mt. Pleasant fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in Southeast Conference play with the loss. The Panthers play at No. 5 (3A) Benton on Monday.
