PELLA — Former Mt. Pleasant prep Sam Beatty was given a top honor by Central College last month as the 2019 Panther graduate was named Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year.
Beatty, currently a junior at Central, is a standout in both men’s basketball and track and field.
Beatty started 23 of 24 games for the Central basketball team, averaging 9.1 points in the process. He dished out 35 assists on the year and sank 14 3-pointers.
One week after the basketball season ended, Beatty placed second in the high jump at the American Rivers Conference’s indoor championships. He lept 6 feet, 7.5 inches, which qualified for nationals. At nationals, he took 13th overall.
Beatty competed at the collegiate high jump level in the 2022 Drake Relays on April 29. At Drake, he lept 6 feet, 6.75 inches to finish 13th overall.
In high school, Beatty led the Panther boys’ basketball team with 14.9 points per game in his senior year. He was also a state qualifier and Drake Relays qualifier in the high jump. In 2019, Beatty tied for second place at the Class 3A state high jump, clearing 6-foot-7 in his last-ever high school competition.
