MT. PLEASANT — Four area schools battled at the Mt. Pleasant co-ed meet at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex on Thursday night, and the Panther boys and girls track and field teams hosted Washington, Fairfield and Mid-Prairie in the final meet of March.
The meet saw the Washington and Mid-Prairie girls rise, collecting 11 wins between the two squads. It also saw a long-standing record go down on the boys’ side.
Washington won six events in girls’ competition, including a first place showing in the shuttle hurdle. The quartet of Ryen Pepper, Nelly Ponce-Cruz, Kendall Hinrichsen and Leighton Messinger crossed in 1:12.73 to beat out Mid-Prairie’s Sophia Miller, Nora Pennington, Olivia Schlabach and Behla Schmidt for first place.
Messinger took first in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the tape in 16.98 seconds. Schmidt of Mid-Prairie was second in that event as well. Messinger was also the high jump champion, clearing 4 feet, 10 inches.
Washington’s Iris Dahl took first in the 800-meter run, crossing in 2:25.62. Pepper was first in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:11.93.
The Demon 4X400 team of Abigail Kleese, Taylor Bartholomew, Taylor Miksch and Iris Dahl took first, finishing in 4:29.77. That topped Mid-Prairie’s second-place team of Danielle Hostetler, Annika Poll, Greta Sieren and Hannah Rodgers.
Addison Miller finished second in the 400-meter run for the Demons, crossing in 1:08.27.
The Demon boys had a longtime track record fall, as Micah Rees finished the 3000-meter run in 9:16.15. That time broke Perry Standard’s previous best at WHS. Standard ran a 9:37 in 1974, and that record stood for 50 years before Rees shattered that time on Thursday night.
Also winning for Washington was the distance medley team of Kael Williams, Conner Leyden, Seth Shepherd and Tyler Alderton, which finished in 3:20.65. Josh Anderson won the wheelchair shot put, throwing it 13 feet, 6.5 inches.
The Demon boys took second in the sprint medley, running the team of Keider Gomez Valdez, Kael Williams, Alec Ulin and Logan McDole. Greyson Hartman gave Washington a second-place finish in the shot put.
Mid-Prairie had five wins on the girls’ side, including a sweep in the distance runs. Hostetler won the 1500, crossing the tape in 5:07.50, just over four seconds ahead of teammate Abby Fleming. Brooklyn Stutzman won the 3000 in 11:05.03, beating out Washington’s Iris Dahl by just under three seconds.
The Golden Hawk girls’ sprint medley squad of Dakota Mitchell, Safly, Lueck and Jovi Evans won, crossing in 1:55.19. Mt. Pleasant’s Bailey Jalas, Alex Scott, Kynlee White and Courtney Raub took second in that event.
The Mid-Prairie girls’ distance Medley team of Mitchell, Lueck, Lanee Duwa and Hostetler won, in 4:33.63. Lueck won the long jump, leaping 15 feet, 11 inches.
Taking second for the Mid-Prairie girls was Jovi Evans in the 200, and the quartet of Poll, Kendall Landstrum, Fleming and Hostetler in the 4X800.
Jayden Stafford swept the wheelchair races for the Mid-Prairie boys, winning the 100, the 400 and the 200. Anderson of Washington finished second in all those events.
Emmett Swartzentruber took the 1600-meter run for the Golden Hawks, crossing in 4:36.44. Jayse Yoder was second in the 800, and Burke Berry took second in the discus.
The hosting Panthers had two wins on the girls’ side. Savannah Slobodnik won the discus, and the 4X200 team of Kiyah Sanders, Alex Scott, White and Andi Scott won, in 1:56.87.
The Panther girls’ 4X100 team of Raub, White, Jalas and Alex Scott took second.
Mt. Pleasant’s Avin Truong took home a first place finish for the Panthers in the long jump, leaping 21 feet, 9 inches.
Fairfield had one win on the boys’ side. Eli Zillman took first place in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 5 inches. Ryan Giberson was second, clearing 6 foot, 1 inch.
