MARSHALLTOWN — The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association hosted two classes of co-ed state golf tournaments Tuesday.
The Class 1A competition was at the American Legion Golf Course where Columbus and Mid-Prairie participated. The Class 2A tourney was at Elmwood Country Club where Washington and Mt. Pleasant competed.
The top 10 teams received medals in the 18-hole alternate-shot format. The boys tee off on the odd holes and girls tee off on the even holes. After the respective tee shot, players alternate hitting the ball until it is in the hole.
Mt. Pleasant had the best finish with seniors Elli Liechty and Brevin Wilson carding an 81 for fifth in Class 2A. They had a 41 on the first nine holes and closed with a 40. Burlington’s Lauren Briggs and Nate Spear won by shooting 37-37—74.
Mid-Prairie’s Madelyn Bender and Dominic McCain had a score of 41-42—83 which tied for 10th in 1A with Williamsburg.
"They both hit some great shots and really complemented each other,“ Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said. ”This is a fun event for the golfers to end the season.“
The tiebreaker was who scored better on the hardest hole. The Golden Hawks made a par on the long par 5 second hole to Williamsburg's bogey. Clear Lake won 1A at 76.
Jobie Lekwa and Cole Storm of Columbus shot an even score of 100 in 1A.
Washington’s Kaylin Long and Isaac Vetter carded 44-51—95. McKenna Conrad and Teague Mayer shot 51-50—101.
