MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant girls soccer’s season came to an end on Monday night with a 4-2 loss to Ottumwa.
What was began as a back and forth contest through the first half, turned into a lopsided second as the Bulldogs held the Panthers scoreless through the final 40 minutes.
Things were looking good for the Panthers midway through the first.
After an early goal by Ottumwa gave itself a 1-0 advantage, Mt. Pleasant scored the next two to take what would be their only lead of the night.
Charice Auwerda scored the first to tie the game at 1-1 off a nice through ball. Auwerda blistered past the Bulldogs back line and was able to slip the ball past the Ottumwa keeper into the left side of the net.
Mt. Pleasant wasn’t done there. Minutes later the Panther’s Tori Wilson was able to break away from the Bulldogs defensive line and put one past a diving Blythe Schmidt to give them a one-goal lead, 2-1.
Despite being out shot in the first half, the Panthers still held onto the lead with just under three minutes until the half.
However, Ottumwa had an answer. With 2:14 on the clock, the Bulldog’s Illana Vasconez struck the ball from well outside the box and it just got passed the outstretched hands of Eli Heaton in goal.
The Panthers and Bulldogs went into the half tied at 2-2.
Everything changed early in the second. With the match still knotted heading into the 53rd minute, the Bulldogs caught a break when a deep pass headed toward the Panthers’ box.
Both Heaton and Sonya Simon raced toward the ball along with the Bulldogs’ Vasconez.
A collision ensued as Simon and Vasconez knocked into each other. To the Panthers dismay, Simon was given a red card, leaving them one players short the rest of the match.
Ottumwa quickly put the go ahead goal into the back of the net off a free kick from Mia Garza-Trejo rattled off the side of the post.
The Panthers couldn’t recover as Ottumwa scored once more as Vasconez scored her third of the evening.
With the loss, Mt. Pleasant ends its season at 7-6.
