Mt. Pleasant, Pekin grapple at ND

BURLINGTON - The Mt. Pleasant and Pekin wrestling teams kicked off 2021 with a bang on Saturday. One day into the new year, both Panther teams were at Burlington Notre Dame for the Nike duals.

Each team present had five duals on the day. Mt. Pleasant finished the weekend with a 2-3 record, and Pekin went 1-4.

It was an all-Panther showdown in the first set of duals, which began at 11 a.m. Mt. Pleasant pulled out the 36-28 victory to start the day off on top.

Mt. Pleasant started the dual with three-straight wins, including a pin by Bowen Davis, who defeated Pekin's Gavyn Brown with just five seconds left in the match.

Pekin's Michael Jones responded with a 16-3 major decision over Mt. Pleasant's Reean Seberg to give Pekin its first four points of the match. Mt. Pleasant won the 145-pound match by forfeit to go up 24-4.

A flurry of forfeits helped Pekin climb back to take a 28-24 lead, but Mt. Pleasant won by forfeit at 220 pounds and 285 pounds to win the match 36-28.

Mt. Pleasant's only other win on the day was a 42-12 victory over Louisa-Muscatine. The Panthers' only non-forfeit win in that dual was a third-period pin by Reean Seberg at 138 pounds.

Mt. Pleasant fell to Notre Dame, 54-24, dropped a dual to Wilton, 55-15, and lost to Wapello, 51-16.

Pekin's only victory was a 36-12 over Louisa-Muscatine. It was Jones again with the team's only pin, collecting one in the third period of his 138-pound match.

Pekin lost three more matches on the day. The Panthers fell 58-16 to Notre Dame, 54-30 against Wapello, and 59-15 in a matchup with Wilton.
