IOWA CITY — The Mt. Pleasant softball team came into Saturday’s Rick Doran classic riding a 13-game losing streak, but that was wiped away after just one game in Iowa City.
The Panthers nipped Davenport Central 6-5 in their first game of the weekend. In Game 2, they fell 7-2 against Iowa City West.
Mt. Pleasant fell behind early in its first game, as Davenport Central plated tow runs in the top of the first inning. Mt. Pleasant responded with three in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.
Davenport Central added two in the second to go up 4-3, but Mt. Pleasant responded with two in the third to flip the script and lead 5-4. Davenport Central tied it up at 5-5 with one in the fourth.
Mt. Pleasant’s final run came in the bottom of the fifth, and that would be all she wrote, as starting pitcher Jolynn Martin pitched a scoreless sixth to end the game.
Martin not only threw a complete-game to get the win in the circle, but also led the team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Addison Clark was 2-for-3 with two RBIs as well.
Jersey Beachy went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Panthers. Jayden Housh knocked one runner in, and both Ella McNamee and Kynlee White had two-hit games.
The Panthers were behind early against Iowa City West, as the Trojans knocked in three runs in the first inning and one in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
Mt. Pleasant rallied back to cut it to 4-2 after a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth, but Iowa City West poured on three more in the bottom of the sixth to run away with the game.
White went 2-for-3 in the loss to Iowa City West. Clark and McNamee each drove in runs.
Myah Starr got the start against the Trojans. She gave up seven runs (four earned) over a complete-game six innings.
Mt. Pleasant is now 5-24 on the season. They will travel to Keokuk (4-22) for the Class 4A Region 6 opener on Thursday night.
