NEW LONDON — Mt. Pleasant softball ended a 17 game slide Monday night on the road in New London.
The Panthers were able to hold off a late Tiger push to pull out an 11-8 victory.
For New London it was a tough night on the diamond as the Tigers had their senior night spoiled.
Mt. Pleasant took the advantage early as the Tigers committed a pair of errors to give the Panthers two freebases in the top of the first inning.
Keagyn Coleman got to second from the leadoff spot after a dropped ball in right field. A batter later, Abigail Shelangoski put the ball in play and a Tiger error at first scored Coleman to put the Panthers on the board.
The Panthers put one more put in the first as Chaley Cook knocked one in to give Mt. Pleasant the early 2-0 lead.
New London wasted no time with the answer.
Morgan Jones hit a single and Sophie Malott was walked to give the Tigers their first runners of the game.
Jones stole second and third during Malott’s at-bat setting the Tigers up with a prime scoring opportunity with Megan Lee in the box.
Lee delivered, as her two RBI single knotted the game at 2-2 and the Tigers weren't done yet.
Ruby Myers added another for New London with an RBI single that scored Lee, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Mt. Pleasant was quick to tie it back up in the second as a leadoff double by Lila Cook and a two-out single from Coleman made it 3-3.
After sitting the Tigers down, three up three down in the bottom of the second, the Panthers took the advantage once again.
The Panthers went on to score three runs in the third as Kynlee White, Emma Starr, and Chaley Cook all made it around the base pads. Cook and Macy Jones both tallied RBIs in the inning.
The Tigers and Panthers both scored one additional run through the fourth and heading into the fifth, Mt. Pleasant held onto a 7-4 lead.
New London cut the deficit to two, 7-5, with an RBI double by Bella Dodds in the fifth, but that’s as close as the Tigers would come.
In the top of the sixth, the Panthers began to pull away.
RBI singles from Izzy Sloat, Coleman and a two RBI single from White pushed the Panther’s lead to 11-5 and the Tigers couldn't recover.
But they didn’t go down without a fight.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, New London got it all the way back to three as Lena Nelson, Ruby Myers and Lillie Gallup all batted in runs, but it wasn’t quite enough.
Chaley Cook led the Panthers with three RBIs in the win. She also had a pair of hits.
Keagyn Coleman and Abigail Shelangoski each had three hits. Coleman had one RBI.
Emma Starr and Lila Cook each had two hits. Kynlee White, Macy Jones, Linzy Striegel and Izzy Sloat all had one hit.
Myah Starr pitched a complete game for Mt. Pleasant, finishing with four strikeouts.
Mt. Pleasant moves to 3-25 with the win, while New London drops to 2-17.
