MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant’s Southeast Conference struggles continued on the softball field on Monday night, as a powerful Fort Madison team came into town.
The Bloodhounds blasted scored over 20 runs in a doubleheader, beating the Panthers 8-1 and 13-3.
Fort Madison collected 11 hits in Game 1, scoring three in the first inning and never relinquishing the lead.
Mt. Pleasant’s Keagyn Coleman went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Abigail Shelangoski was 1-for-2 with a triple, and Chaley Cook went 1-for-3.
Myah Starr was tagged with the loss in the circle, giving up eight runs, only two of which were earned.
Early runs doomed the Panthers again in Game 2. Fort Madison’s Gabrielle Ruble went 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs to help push the Bloodhounds to victory.
Mt. Pleasant hit the ball well in Game 2, but just couldn’t get many runs across. The Panthers had 11 base hits in the contest.
“We hit the ball better tonight in both of those two games than we have all year,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Derek Coleman. “If we can continue to build on this, it's only going to get better.”
Cook went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the charge. Emma Starr was 2-for-3 with a double, and Macy Jones went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Panthers are now 2-21 overall and 1-12 in conference play. Mt. Pleasant is scheduled to play at Davis County on Wednesday night.
