MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant softball program has its first conference win under new head coach Derek Coleman.
The Panthers put it all together on Thursday night to beat Southeast Conference foe Keokuk 10-3, just days after getting swept by the Chiefs on the road.
“We started with energy, and we kept that energy all night,” said Coach Coleman. “To lose to this same team earlier this week and then come back and beat them pretty good, is a good thing.”
The Panthers erupted on offense in the first two innings. Mt. Pleasant erased a 1-0 deficit with a four-run first and added on with a two-run second to take a 7-1 advantage. Mt. Pleasant would add three more in the fourth.
Keagyn Coleman had the big hit early, knocking in a pair of runners with a bases-loaded hit. The freshman finished the night 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
“I was pumped,” Coleman said. “I kind of got up there and got scared, but I knew I had a job I needed to do, and I did it.”
Emma Starr had the only other RBI for the Panthers. Myah Starr got the win on the mound, giving up just three runs (two earned) over seven innings.
“I think we all just had a big boost of energy today,” Starr said. “It's pretty exciting.”
After a handful of losses at the Fairfield tournament over the weekend, Mt. Pleasant went to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
