BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant baseball experienced mixed results in its Southeast Conference doubleheader against Burlington on Monday at Community Field.
The Panthers dropped the opener in a lopsided 13-2 loss but rebounded with an 11-7 win in game two.
Game one was dominated by Burlington from start to finish. The Grayhounds took control with an explosive eight-run third inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and breaking open what had been a 1-0 Mt. Pleasant lead. Burlington added five more runs in the fourth to cap their scoring.
Offensively, the Panthers struggled against Burlington senior Ian Mason, who threw a two-hitter. Brayton Hutson and Liam Marshall recorded Mt. Pleasant’s only hits. J.C. Sitar and Zach Newton each drove in a run, with the Panthers managing a single run in both the third and fifth innings.
In the nightcap, Mt. Pleasant’s bats came alive. After trading single runs in the first two innings, the Panthers surged ahead with a five-run third, highlighted by RBIs from Grayson Lowery, Briar Bender, and Payton Walker.
Although Burlington closed the gap with four runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-6, the Panthers pulled away with a two-RBI single from Griffen Jones in the fourth and additional RBIs from Cooper Coleman and Jones in the sixth.
Walker led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jones added three RBIs on two hits, while Sitar also collected a pair of hits. Hutson, Newton, Lowery, and Bender each contributed one hit. Marshall added two RBIs, and Lowery, Coleman, and Bender each drove in a run.
With the split, Mt. Pleasant improved to 14-10 overall and 9-5 in the SEC, securing third place in the conference standings.
