MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant baseball made quick work of Keokuk in Thursday night’s Southeast Conference matchup, cruising to a 14-4 win in just five innings.
The Panthers (13-9) wasted no time setting the tone, scoring in each of the first four innings while racking up 12 hits along the way. They opened the game with two runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Keokuk (1-17) managed to tie things up with two runs in the top of the second, but Mt. Pleasant responded with a five-run outburst in the bottom half, reclaiming the lead at 7-2, matching their highest-scoring frame of the night.
Senior standouts Brayton Hutson and J.C. Sitar led the offensive charge. Sitar went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs, while Hutson added a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs of his own.
The Chiefs tried to keep pace, scoring two more in the third to cut the deficit to 7-4, but Mt. Pleasant answered right back with two in the bottom half of the frame and added another five runs in the fourth to push the lead to double digits.
On the hill, Grayson Lowery and the stout Panther defense shut the door in the fifth. Lowery went the distance throwing a complete game. He allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned), walked one, and struck out five.
Cooper Coleman chipped in with two hits and two RBIs, while Payton Walker added two hits and an RBI. Zach Newton also contributed a hit in the victory.
The win improves Mt. Pleasant’s SEC record to 8-4. Mt. Pleasant will look to shake up the conference standings with a pair of wins against SEC leader Burlington on Monday night.
