Panthers drop SEC match with Fort Madison on Day 1

MT. PLEASANT — For the first time ever, there was Iowa high school tennis being played in August at East Lake Park on Thursday evening.
The Mt. Pleasant girls tennis team took on their first foe in Southeast Conference rival Fort Madison, falling 5-4 in the first match of the school year.
All four wins for the Panthers came in singles matches, as the Top-4 Mt. Pleasant players pulled out victories.
Lila Cook made her debut at No. 1 on the team, beating Fort Madison’s Lucille Zimmerman 8-2.
At No. 2, Mia Gray pulled out a 9-6 win for the Panthers over Fort Madison’s Mady Emmett. Katana Phangchanthong took the No. 3 matchup 8-5 over Fort Madison’s Savannah Sissel.
Bella Dodds made her high school tennis debut with a thrilling 9-7 win over Fort Madison’s Sydney McEntee. Dodds’ win made it 4-2 after a pair of losses at No. 5 and No. 6.
Mt. Pleasant’s Cook and Dodds took a nail-biting loss in the No. 1 doubles match, falling 9-8 (7-4). The No. 2 team of Gray and Phangchanthong were downed 8-5, and the No. 3 team fell as well.
The Panthers played Notre Dame at home on Monday, in a match that got over after presstime. Mt. Pleasant travels to Burlington on Thursday.
